There's only 4.0, 4.0.1m and 4.0.2, and then the dev builds.
Try one of the dev builds in like the 2000 region 01-24-2015, 09:52 AM

Newer changes may have unearthed bugs that were passed over. I personally have no issues with freezing or hangs on the latest build

I tried it on 2999, but the game was very choppy, noise, characters, movement, you name it. It got even more so once the professor opened the gate, will older versions be more likely to run smoother? 01-27-2015, 02:13 PM
Newer builds are usually smoother, but an older version may get you past the freeze of the professor, then you can save past it.

Yeah. When I have the time I'll try to bisect the builds and see when that initial screen freeze and the professor freeze come from (if I can get the professor freeze to happen)
You could always try bisecting to find the bad build if you wanted/have free time. 01-28-2015, 12:50 AM
