Pairing 3rd Party Wiimote With Windows 10

This isn't directly related to Dolphin as such (though I will say that Dolphin is Awesome), but this still seems like the place to post it due to an active community based around Wii Remotes.

So I am working on a virtual reality project, that combines Wii remotes and LEAP motion to emulate Vive wands in Steam VR. The project itself is almost done, and close to fully working, However I would like to be able to use third party Wiimotes (Specifically the PowerA Mini wiimotes with motion plus built in), There are some very old topics on third party wiimotes already here (even that specific one), but whatever I do I cannot seem to get Windows (or android) to recognise the remotes at all over bluetooth (have tried on multiple systems with different adaptors). The main problem people seem to be having in the older topics is not working with dolphin, which isn't an issue for me, as I want to use these exclusively with my application which I have the full source code for.

I have tried Bluesoliel and Toshiba stacks, and neither of them (or the windows stack) will recognise the PowerA Wiimote in pairing mode, where the original Wiimote works just fine. I understand a sensible work around may be to just use official Wii remotes, however those are ridiculously expensive nowadays (especially outside the US), and these are nice remotes, arguably nicer than the originals.

There have been reports on these forums of windows at least being able to see these remotes, so i am guessing a different BT dongle may work (though not sure what one) (Or Windows 10 broke it somehow), I was wondering if the Dolphin Bar would work for connecting these Wii Remotes, and (possibly) making use of the sensor bar without using dolphin, and instead accessing the wii remotes through code? If the dolphin bar wouldn't work could someone who has used third party wiimotes recommend a BT adaptor? I find it hard to understand what can be so different about the hardware that the unofficial/3rd party ones cannot be seen at all, when the official ones will pair just fine, surely they both send out a similar (Bluetooth) signal?

I would really appreciate some help/insight with this, even know it is not directly dolphin related. Thanks.

You need to do a LIAC query to see most third-party Wiimotes. Official remotes are visible without this, but on a real Wii, the Bluetooth stack uses LIAC for discovery. See PR 3865 for how it's done in Dolphin's Linux Bluetooth code. No idea if this is possible to do on Windows; it's probably not.

AFAIK, Android broke something with Wii Remotes, even official remotes, so you won't be able to get it working there.

Probably. Keep in mind that the DolphinBar will only expose the HID packets.

The sensor bar has nothing to do with Dolphin. In fact, it has nothing to do with the Wii Remote or Bluetooth either. It simply emits IR light.

Ok thanks for the help it is much appreciated and makes a lot of sense. The only LIAC code i can find for windows appears to be part of the Bluecove java library and i'm not entirely sure whether it would work (or I would get it to work), or not. Am I right in thinking that the dolphin bar would connect LIAC only (3rd party) remotes, without additional steps, and still allow me to use a (possibly modified version of a) low level C library (Wiiuse), to access the hardware? If so I'll just buy a dolphin bar, otherwise I guess i'll look into trying to force a BT dongle to use LIAC discovery mode. Thanks again for the help.

The DolphinBar should be able to connect 3rd party Wiimotes. The only way to know if it works is to try it.

If wiiuse is able to use Wiimotes connected as HIDs, then yes, it should work.

Ok thanks again for the quick reply. As far as I know Wiiuse just uses a standard HID interface to communicate with the remotes, so that means it should theoretically work. I don't really want to spend the money on a Dolphin Bar if it is unlikely to work, it would be good if someone with experience using a Dolphin Bar with 3rd party Wiimotes on a modern Windows system could chime in. I guess i'll buy a dolphin bar after a few days if I get no further response. Thanks again for all the help

Well, the issue is that unlike official remotes, there are more than just 2-3 models. 3rd party Wiimotes can widely vary in compatibility, so even if it works for someone with a 3rd party Wiimote, it may not work for you.

I understand that, but from what I gather the main thing that is stopping it from working is the use of LIAC Discovery mode, so if someone else has successfully connected a LIAC only Wii remote to Windows 7 (or even Vista) or above with a Dolphin Bar, then there is a good chance that mine will work also, and a risk I am willing to take.
