OS X GCN Adapter kext - Testers Wanted!!

Hi,
I am using the Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter, and have gotten a GameCube controller to work successfully. I, however, cannot get more than one controller to work. All ports are set to GameCube Adapter For Wii U, and I can get a controller to work in the first port, but not any of the ports no matter what configuration I try. I read that OSX might have an issue with reading more than 1 port due to, "how OSX handles HID devices with multiple Report IDs," seen here-->https://github.com/area/osx-wiiu-gcc-adapter/releases I downloaded the latest file from that link, but have no idea how to install it (there's no readme or instructions). If that is a fix or if there is a simpler fix please let me know. I cannot wait to dive into my childhood nostalgia. Thank you very much, BlanK 12-11-2018, 10:35 AM

Hi,
macOS Catalina seems to have made this kext obsolete. After upgrading to Catalina Dolphin immediately recognised the adapter without any fumbling with the SIP preferences and stuff. I could even delete the kext from my Extensions folder. Can anyone else test and confirm this? 10-18-2019, 03:03 AM
Forget what I wrote earlier. The supplemental update released two days ago broke it again...

Any help? Did you follow the instructions to deactivate SIP before installing the driver? You can safely re-enable it afterwards. By the way: Since upgrading to Catalina, everytime there is an OS update macOS “forgets” to take the adapter hostage until the next reboot. 02-14-2020, 01:03 AM
It took me some time, but with this thread I figured out how to set up the GCN Adapter on my Mac. To make it easier for some users, I want to share what I did and in what order:
Let's start with my setup: MacBook Pro 2017: OSX 10.14.3 (Mojave) In my experience from OSX Catalina onwards the security restrictions are too tough for a lot things, which is why I downgraded after installing Catalina some while ago. 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB RAM Dolphin 5.0 SSBM MKDD The unofficial Software Pyramid Adapter An official GCN Smash Controller that came out with Smash 4 An old Standard GCN Controller At first, not being a pro on Mac, but not a dummy either, I did this and that and nothing worked, but the order is quite important, so I hope I get this right: 1. I startet off disabling my kext signing, also called SIP or Gatekeeper. You do that by following the stackexchange postet on page 2 in this thread. For this you need to start up your Mac via the Recoverymode. (cmd+D) 2. I then restarted my Mac, logged in and put the text (also on page two, or the Dolphin wiki) into Terminal. Another restart after that and from here on, your controllers should already work. If done correctly, you can ignore the controller setup now and just set them to GCN Adapter for WiiU. Also make sure to set the adapter to WiiU/Switch mode and not on PC mode. 3. Be wise and reenable the SIP/Gatekeeper again, (same process as disabling it, but put "enable" instead of "disable" in the Terminal in Recoverymode), otherwise your Mac might have issues with malware some time in the future. As stated before, the controllers still work after reenabling. Ready to go! Short: 1. disable SIP 2. enter provided text from this thread or the Dolphin wiki for the adapter to be recognised 3. reenable SIP 4. done! It really was that easy. The controllers still work in other games such as Cuphead from Steam, if you set the Adapter back to PC mode. Hope I got everything correct and that this helps some users. Have a nice day! |
