Seeing something very interesting on my Early 2013 15in. MBP when running games in fullscreen mode after upgrading to 10.10.2. The issue did not exist on 10.9. It does NOT seem to be related to any graphics settings, as I'll describe - no slowdown with 1x vs. 2x IR, etc.
I'm playing FE:Radiant Dawn and it runs perfectly smooth on my system, steady 60 FPS in a window. I can maximize the window and it'll still run 60 FPS. Also, I know there's still room for performance because I can disable the frame limiter and it cranks up to over 100FPS.
However, as soon as I put the game in fullscreen mode, it instantly drops from 60 to around 30-35 FPS steady. I can still disable frame limit and it speeds right back up to 100~ FPS. But it won't settle at the normal 60. This happens on the least aggressive settings or the most aggressive graphics settings - it's not general slowdown due to system specs.
This morning I tried full screen again and noticed something funny though - if I use the mouse and hover over either the top of the screen and have it display the menu bar while playing the game, or over the bottom and have it display the dock, the fullscreen FPS shoot back up to 60 like normal! Maybe the graphics driver likes to render fullscreen as background, and gives it low priority or something, then the UI overlay bumps it back up? I'm a software security engineer, not a driver developer.
So there's something funky going on with OS X 10.10.2 and fullscreen mode. Anyone else see this?
