Two parts to this. Firstly, what other non-Nvidia manufacturers have GPU's with the hardware capabilities to run full OpenGL 4, and what manufacturers are actually semi-remotely likely to implement it? I know Qualcomm won't be doing it for 4xx, because it only goes up to AEP level features, but would 5xx be theoretically capable? I'm pondering this because I was debating what new mobile GPU's can actually bring (Adreno 5xx, Mali 9xx, PowerVR 7/8) and besides opening up full openGL (and unbreaking everything) I don't see what else they could offer beyond efficiency and raw speed. I'm just opening this up because Nvidia still isn't making huge progress with Tegra marketshare (and the N9 doesn't really count with the crippling drivers), so I'm holding out hope that another real alternative could come out for gamers.

The a4xx has the physical support for up to OpenGL 3.2.
The Mali-T6/7/8xx GPUs can support somewhere past OpenGL 4.x
The chances of any of these manufacturers supporting desktop GL is basically zero.

Hey I can hope. I don't see what Adreno 5xx could offer besides more feature support, and maybe unbroken everything. Really just disappointed in general, and even thought right now the situation is basically unworkable, it would be nice if the future at least held improvement (which is never true with mobile GPU vendors)

The only bright future I can see is the freedreno, anything rather than this looks not so bright. You can't count on Qualcomm at all since most of the devices based on their adreno 3xx won't even receive lolipop updated driver, HTC One M7 will continue to have old and bugged v45, some devices doing better and will have v84 as a part of 5.0 update but still, it's already an old one and most likely it's the last driver update for a3xx. A4xx might finally have few extentions that dolphin badly needs but there are no promises and no ETAs from Qualcomm so it's just a hope. As for Nvidia: they doing things slowly, not taking any risks, we don't have anything except Nexus 9 which have Denver SoC and it's not even possible to predict when they're going to push Maxwell and if there'll be any phones based on this SoC, OEMs is a different story. Mali and PowerVr are not even considerable for number of different reasons. So I'd say Freedreno is what we should be looking for but it'll take some time..

Last driver for Adreno 330 is v95/99 not v84

Also next year OpenGL NG should becoming out which will unify OpenGL and OpenGL ES.

This. Hopefully the 5.0 GL unification includes mandatory openGl 4.4 context support. That would be a nice method of forcing everyone onto desktop GL.

It's doesn't really matter since many/most of the 2014s flagship devices (a3xx) won't even see v84 and those which will be updated to v84 most likely will never get v95. 90% of OEMs doesn't care about driver revisions with minor (and in a case of lolipop major) firmware updates.

As for GL NG, there doesn’t seem to be a timeline for the release, but I doubt it’ll be soon
