Did you volt it incrementally?

Yeah, I got there step by step starting at 1.25v. It wasn't until 1.4v that I didn't get a BSOD after a few hours of Prime blend.

Is 1.4v really high? Maybe I do need to step that back down and live with 4.6 or 4.5.

Quote:Yeah, summer makes your temps rise by 10c or so.

Yeah where I live its really hot, like consistently over 100F during the day.

Quote:Well, that's pretty hot I'd say. Consider lowering your voltages and overclock a bit. The 200MHz will barely make a difference.

Really? I guess I got the impression from unsatisfactory performance with my E6300 that Dolphin wants every bit of power it can have. If I can still play games within 3-4 fps where I am now at 4.5ghz then not fighting that heat seems worth it too me. My HTPC case has pretty bad airflow compared to my servers, and I want the fan on low, so it is an uphill fight. Smile

Quote:Oh and out of curiosity, which MSI motherboard did you get?

P67A-GD55. For years I only bought Gigabyte, but I got this on a deal I have been really impressed with it. My old picky HyperX ram even likes it.

IMO it is high if you can get your CPU stable at 4.5GHz at a much lower voltage.
Trust me, you won't miss that 200MHz.

Well that's very hot. How are the 'normal' days? Or winter even?

Ah... a HTPC case. Does it have casefans?
If your fans on high speed really make a difference, then don't hassle to set them on high speed.
My fans are running on high speed, and they're still very quiet.

Ah, good choice. Very solid motherboard too with nice expansion possibilities.

Ok, thanks again on the good advice. I will work back down to 4.5ghz. I think my procy thanks you too.

Well it can go 100F+ for more than a week here during the summer. "Normal" days outside those are in the 90s (often high 90s) from May till Halloween. Winters are short, but can get below freezing for multiple days too.

No, not a real HTPC case. My real HTPC case (an Antec NSK2480) won't fit the huge cooler, so I am using a Thermaltake SopranoRS currently. I like the PS3-ish black front, but I will admit it has much worse airflow than my servers (Antec 300 and 1200) or the NSK2480. If 4.5ghz knocks down the temps enough I could probably get by with my Scythe Mini Ninja hsf which does fit in the HTPC case.

My fans are Antec TrueQuiet 120s. One on the back and one on the case side above the GPU, both left on high speed. Oh and the aforementioned Antec Tri-cool 120 on the hsf left on low.
