No sound or horrible sound

Hello,
I have a problem with sound not working. I downloaded dolphin a day or two ago, and so far have mostly experimented with controls. My sound on my laptop is usually off so I didn't notice that it wasn't working until I actually tried playing today.

There is absolutely no sound on the standard settings, being HLE (fast), Cubeb at 20 latency. After looking around online I found someone with the same issue who was able to fix it by altering some settings, namely changing it to HLE recompiler and cubeb, but that didn't change anything for me. Then I tried the other available backend option, wasapi (I tried all three HLE options on both backends). This one finally gave me sound, but it's absolutely horrible. It's very crackly at lower latency, and some other weird but similar effect at higher latency. I played around with the audio stretching settings too, but I'm not sure if it changed anything. If I use wasapi the game also won't load half of the time and it leads to dolphin not responding.

I tried this out with two games (skyward sword and pokepark 2) as I don't have any others at the moment. I also tried with earbuds but I couldn't get it to load in the few times I tried with wasapi. I should have the latest beta version of dolphin.

Make sure your Windows is up to date.
Check your Windows Volume Mixer (right-click on the sound icon in the tray) and see if Dolphin is turned down or something

There don't seem to be any windows updates right now, and I hadn't checked volume mixer yet. I tried just now, but dolphin's volume seems to be just fine (although I think you might have helped me fix a problem I had with another application, so thanks for that!) . And if it was turned off over there wouldn't the other backend not work either?
