To offer up a contrary position, I was hella disappointed by Octopath Traveler. No overarching plot but instead 8 little stories of varying quality that don't intersect at all, zero interaction between characters, needing to have characters in party to gain exp increasing grinding, very repetitive in large part to the separation between the cast, and poor difficulty balancing made it either way too hard or way too easy for any given situation even when overleveled. As someone who adores JRPGs... I abandoned it and won't be finishing it. It's just doesn't have what I come to RPGs for: good plot, good characters, and interactions between them.
The combat system is really interesting, but most of the game is really easy so you never need to know how to min max it until you hit a difficulty spike that DEMANDS tightly optimized strategies. Not to mention different difficulty spikes need different flavors of cheese to overcome them, otherwise it will just destroy you. Just, bleh, very poorly done. To each their own of course, and your taste in games is very different from mine, but I wanted to temper your expectations. It is generally regarded as an interesting but flawed JRPG experiment. IMO, play Bravely Default instead. That game had an even better combat system with great story and great characters! Although I must agree on one point. I had more fun with both Bravely games (100+ hours on the first, and 80+ hours on the second). There's just so much to experiment with, and even though a couple of game-breaking strategies exist, it's exciting to find one on your own. I'd definitely recommend playing them in Citra for HD glory. They seem to work pretty well in my tests.
Hmm yeah, the Bravely Default series. I never really had the time to play through them, but I always wanted to try those. Through Octopath Traveler seems to appeal to me more with it's presentation and graphical style.
The Nintendo Switch Lite's been announced, which doesn't seem to sacrifice graphics quality but drops more features than I'd thought. To use a quote from a family discussion: "They should call it the Can't Switch."

They mentioned something about it only supporting games that work in handheld mode, are there any games that don't support that mode (yet)?

This is meh for me. I played XBC2 and Octopath in portable mode, but the rest of my games I play in TV mode. These days I don't even touch the Joy Cons and just use a GC USB controller. So this new Switch isn't for me.

I would use a GC controller for all my games, but a lot of then require more buttons than are available.
