I think that might have been because of your situation. 
When I played through it a few months ago, it was really boring and difficult to go through. I mean, it takes like 40 hours of much too easy combat and puzzles before the game even reaches the plot, and then it ends on a cliffhanger for the unreleased sequel. It was very unsatisfying!
