Except that I don't need cloud saves (never did) and that it's only NES... Just NES... No titles which the Virtual Console had on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS... So... Why should I bother with a paid service? I don't expect Nintendo to suddenly provide a flawless online experience. Perhaps I am just spoiled with free online gaming on the PC and previous Nintendo systems. Not that Nintendo was even that great with online gaming to begin with. I guess it is just offline experiences such as Super Mario Odyssey that are going to matter for me. It's a shame that Balloon World is going to be put behind a paid service, from the sounds of hearing it Balloon World was a great addition.
The issue is not that the service should be paid for. That's fine. All things in life are to be paid for. It is just that as a paid service it can not live up to it's expectations. Everything has to be priced in moderation. I get Nintendo want to earn on players using / exploiting their online servers, but it does come down to that the is a hard competition in today's market. PC gaming does so for free and Xbox and PS with the paid service bring a lot to the table. I mean come on... Why do we even need to use a smartphone for voice chat, not even Microsoft and Sony do that.
The real question is, can Nintendo really keep up? I cared about Nintendo since their NES and for me it is all about delivering games that are being about playing games. In today's world games tend to get a little lost in obscure methods... Paywalls, handholding, microtransactions, daily/monthly events, lootboxes, fetch quests, wait timers, overly reusing content, not being able to get rid of outdated design (glares at Assassin's Creed's trailing missions), following the hype (ugh... Battle Royale), controversies (no politics my in games, thank you). Nintendo as one of the few larger companies left still manages to develop games that stay true to what a game is really supposed to be. And I value that the most. Breath of the Wild didn't happen to be my favorite game of all time by chance, Nintendo understood their own game and what made it so great. You can not come to any other conclusion than that the developers themselves really loved the game. The same they did before with Ocarina of Time. You should ask yourself, does Epic Games really love Fortnite because it is so amazing? Or simply because it brings a lot of money to the table *glares at Blizzard with angry eyes*.
But I am getting side-tracked here and I am probably acting all sour like usual. It is just that I care a lot for Nintendo and I have high hopes of them. Perhaps it is unrealistic. But Nintendo has proven several times to have made some of the best games ever made. The Nintendo 64 has to be my favorite console of all time, purely there was so many instant classics which still hold up in their gameplay perfectly today *hints at Nintendo*. I shouldn't forget about Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy either. So each time it feels like Nintendo misses a crucial chance, I tend to be quite harsh on them. Just because I expect a lot.
Ok... I'm done.
