E3 ain't what it used to be. It's a far cry from what it was in the 90s or early 2000s. It just doesn't have the same relevancy anymore. I'd argue that one of the larger purposes behind Nintendo Direct announcements was for the company to set their own timetable for releasing info and generating anticipation. E3 only comes once a year, and depending on when a game is going to be released, it may not be ideal for game developers to drop announcements of new games.
