You would definitely notice the difference between 720 and 1080 at a normal viewing distance using the Switch. Pixel density on the Switch's display definitely leaves more to be desired at that size from a technical standpoint.
4K is no longer the future in my opinion, the GTX 1070 is $380 which is expensive but not as expensive as most computers. It can play any Gamecube or Wii game at 4K UHD at 60fps. It can also play new titles like Battlefield 1 at a darn good 40-60fps as well. My 4K setup cost less than a Mac Pro so it's definitely in the consumer ballpark. 4K tv's dominate the TV market too.
When you can only afford 500-600 pounds for the entire thing, yes it is expensive. That's not even counting the cost of the 4K monitor itself.
Oh, noes, the Switch is a smaller than my tablet and higher resolution, whatever shall I do?
720p is GREAT for a portable gaming device, and I'd rather have the extra battery life. They could have had it output in 1080p by running the chip at full power, but then it wouldn't last as long.
It's obvious we won't agree on that; none of our systems are above 1080p, we simply see no need for the huge extra cost.
