These resolution-wars are freaking stupid, especially because if you want to actually use that 4K monitor for games you'll need a graphics card as expensive as most computers.
The Switch does not have 5.5" diagonal it's 6.2", and it doesn't have the 1080p resolution you're happy with. You would definitely notice the difference between 720 and 1080 at a normal viewing distance using the Switch. Pixel density on the Switch's display definitely leaves more to be desired at that size from a technical standpoint.
4K is no longer the future in my opinion, the GTX 1070 is $380 which is expensive but not as expensive as most computers. It can play any Gamecube or Wii game at 4K UHD at 60fps. It can also play new titles like Battlefield 1 at a darn good 40-60fps as well. My 4K setup, including the monitor, cost less than a Mac Pro so it's definitely in the consumer ballpark. 4K tv's dominate the TV market too.
