There are no reliable sources, that's my bad. Though there are no official statements, the popular opinion (for a while) was that the dock somehow beefed up the system--maybe it gave it more RAM, maybe it gave it some power and clocked up the CPU a bit, maybe it did the same for the GPU etc. But given that you asked for a source, the recent opinion that I found when I searched seems to be that this is likely not the case. If that's true, then that's great--but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Anyway, my bad for jumping the gun.

When it's docked, you can't use the Switch screen. The dock completely covers it up. So it's pretty much TV mode-only at that point.

Maybe the TV dock will allow the hardware to run at a higher clock speed since saving battery isn't an issue anymore when it's plugged to AC power. Again, we can only speculate.
From France with love.

It could be sth like an external GPU . Tegra X1 is weak but it should run game well at low res ( tablet) . When it's docked, an external GPU will give it more GPU horse power for higher res (TV)
Sony did this with their slim Vaio Laptop :

Though I have no idea what custom tegra GPU Nintendo will use

From what I've heard, so far all the signs point to the docking station being just... a docking station. Allows the TV output and charging. At least that's what Ars Technica has lead me to believe. March gets closer every day, so we'll see. Nintendo said they won't be making any more announcements about the Switch until next year. They're being very Apple-like this time around, going for a lot of secrecy + controlled media (i.e. leaks seem pretty minimal so far, just a lot of rumors). I think the suspense could work for them though.

That dock is too thick to be only a charging station/TV connection, I'm betting on additional hardware sitting inside it too. Another rumor I read somewhere else justified the extra thickness of the dock due housing a hard drive for additional storage (but then, how would you transition seamlessly from the TV to portable mode, like in the trailer?)

I read a rumor that it has a tegra x2 sli chip so if that rumor is true by just disabling the sli part in it could work ok switching between portable 720p and 1080p. The processing power requirements is about double for 1080p compared to 720p, so disable sli and you are good to go i guess? It would be a pretty smart move if that is the case.

So the switch might use Maxwell Tegra chip , not Pascal
And I though I fed up with my Maxwell GTX 750...
What a huge letdown if this is true

The rumor has always been that the Switch uses a Tegra X1, with the *possibility* that it's an X2. So um, it's what everyone already thought? Boo? It will still be much more powerful than the Wii U.

But meh, it's still a rumor, so it might be an X2 after all! We'll see?
