If you were in the process of murdering somebody in the middle of the street at noon, I'm sure the response time would be measured in minutes at most, maybe seconds or dozens of seconds if there happened to be a patrol or something nearby.

If you illegally download a game, I doubt anything would happen. If you somehow for some reason got tracked down, then the worst that would probably happen would be that after a few weeks, perhaps a couple months, you'd be sued/fined.

If you rip a game from your console and use the file to play it on an emulator, nothing whatsoever could realistically happen, unless you store it in the cloud or something, simply because the file wouldn't be on the internet - and copyright agencies don't spy on everybody's PCs individually. That said, according to everything else which has been said in this thread, even if somehow a legal case ensued, you'd be very unlikely to be in any kind of trouble yourself.

If you plan on doing something else not covered here, and are using game ripping as an excuse to secretly gather information on your home town's police force in order to facilitate some illegal undertaking, then this isn't the right place to look. Tongue

No it's not that. I was just measuring how fast the cops would respond to this if it was illegal. Shonumi said it'd be a matter of seconds before they reach me. So I intend to download Dolphin and the software required to rip the games. I should wait at least a few months and then if there's nobody pounding on my door and if there's no flashing lights then I should good.

Shonumi said it'd be a matter of seconds before they reach me.

I'd just like to point out the "/s" Shonumi put after the statement. It's an abbreviation for "</sarcasm>", which is a way of pointing out that you're sarcastic over the internet (in the shape of a fake html tag).

So no, Shonumi didn't say the cops would be on you in a matter of seconds. Instead, it was a sarcastic reply, because it's obviously not true and neither is the original statement (that it would be a matter of minutes). As I said, if you are somehow caught breaching copyright or something, at best it'd be like a couple weeks. It's not like the cops are gonna come knocking on your door.

JSYK, the internet isn't monitored to the point where your every download is inspected. Also, given the size of Dolphin's userbase, I think your experiment of downloading and waiting a few months is redundant, since nobody else so far has had any trouble.

Yeah, that comment was totally sarcastic. Sarcasm translates very badly over the internet, which is why /s is used for these situations. If read the rest of my post, I very obviously pointed out why the police wouldn't be knocking on your door (like ever) for dumping your own game (it's not criminal copyright infringement, and it's not copyright infringement at all).

If you're talking about dumping your own games, you're already in the clear (stop being paranoid :p).

You have been a member here since 2013 and now you're starting to wonder if it's OK to dump your own games?
I've been dumping games for a long long time and nothing have ever happened.

Yes it's perfectly legal, emulators have always been legal as far as I know.
I started to use emulators 1999, I don't think things have changed since then because it was already legal back then.

EDIT:

While emulators is legal to use and download, BIOSes to use with emulators etc. ain't legal to download.
You must dump the BIOS yourself from your own consoles to use with ePSXe, PCSX2, Dolphin etc.
