Question
What're Nintendo's discs based off of, CDs or DVDs?

GameCube and Wii are based from DVD and Wii U are based from blu-ray, but I'm not sure about Wii U...
Avell A70 MOB: Core i7-11800H, GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB DDR4-3200, Windows 11 (Insider Preview)
ASRock Z97M OC Formula: Pentium G3258, GeForce GT 440, 16 GB DDR3-1600, Windows 10 (22H2)

GC: Single Layer Mini-DVD
Wii: DVD (mostly single layer, a few games use dual layer)
Wii-U: Single layer BD (dual layer is probably supported but to my knowledge no games use it yet)

They're based on DVD/BD technology but differ in a few ways (for example the BCA). They differ enough that nintendo can avoid paying royalties for DVD/BD technology.

Well does this mean that the discs are copy-protected?

It means they can't be read by normal DVD or BD drives

Yes.

And Wii U emulation won't happen any time soon either. It's not impossible but it ain't gonna happen this decade, at least not playing games as good as in Dolphin.
Maybe someone makes an emulator that runs homebrews in a few years but that's about it.

No, generally the newer a console is the easier it is to emulate due to them running "proper" OSes - everything besides the CPU can be HLE'd, and in the WiiU's case there's plenty of existing code to handle the CPU.
(And why would anyone make a wiiu emulator for homebrew when wiiu homebrew doesn't exist?)

I ain't gonna play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 on a PS3 emulator anytime soon...

I guess you're in the midst of writing a Wii U emulator perhaps?
