800 yes, you could build a very nice computer for dolphin. Say i-2500k with a custom cooler, geforce 460, decent 50-100$ case, equal priced power supply, 4-6gigs of ram at somewhere around a hundred bucks and a good 100-150 motherboard to hook it all into. That's kind of around where you should be heading at that budget. I won't presume to make a build for you because I'm not exceptionally current, not since I made my computer last july.

Did some checking since I just completely overhauled my system back in March to what it is now. Here we go.
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD4-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - $159.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813128494 CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor - $219.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819115072 RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model - $79.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820145261 GPU: XFX HD-679X-ZRFC Radeon HD 6790 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support - $134.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814150564 Case: Whatever you think looks aesthetically pleasing, anything under $50 should suffice. PSU: Not sure what wattage your running currently, for a new system like this, I'd say atleast 600w+. CPU Cooler: I usually swear by Thermaltake, they make very fine aftermarket coolers. My CPU, even at 4.1Ghz, rarely goes above 40C idle. Grand Total for a mega, badass Dolphin rig? = $594.96 +/- $100.00 for other items mentioned. So there ya go. Building a rig using these parts will EASILY run any game at atleast 2x Native (720p) at full speed.

Quote:They will act like Intel but with higher GHz and Intel guys will be embarrassed. That is a baseless assumption and you know it. The little data that we do have seems to suggest it won't be as powerful as sandy bridge in all but the most highly multi-threaded tasks (which are extremely rare since a lot of heavily multi-threaded software these days is hardware accelerated by a gpu if available). But even that data is unverifiable and sketchy at best. You're going to have to wait until it comes out before you can make claims like that with a positive assertion. Even if bulldozers BULLDOZE(aha...) over sandybridges, it would be a "so what" situation, because then the next intel processor would be ontop after that, and so on. Though amd rarely ever has the most powerful processor, for the usual price points people go for the companies are back and forth. "Embarrassed" is just fanboyish, since that would imply you would be embarrassed now with an amd processor.
I was just joking...
I believe he had to wait for Bulldozer if he wanna stay an "AMD guy" with processor as powerful as (or more powerful than) Intel CPUs. jas23, if you had to spend $800 for whole pc right away, then I guess i5 2500k and overclock it with aftermarket cooler is way to go. But unless you could buy am3+ mobo and use your old amd processor (only if am3+ mobo can support that or something) or buy phenom ii temporarily and save up $ for bulldozer. Or perhaps go for powerful phenom ii x6 1100t if you're a true AMD guy and you don't plan to get bulldozer (you can buy am3 mobo instead if you absulotely don't plan to get bulldozer whatsoever). Or just wait for Bulldozer. best intel cpu: i5 2500k or i7 2600k best amd cpu: phenom ii 1100t best cpu that should be able to run smg2 at full speed and even cpu wasn't overclocked: bulldozer FX8170

Jas23, I couldn't check out your links because they were contracted for some reason. If you have in mind a different motherboard, that's fine, whatever you think will work best.
Guys, let's try to keep this on topic and not let it sink into an "Intel vs. AMD" argument, each processor company have their own strengths and weaknesses, ya? If you want to wait for the AMD chip to come out, again, that's up to you. I simply suggested the Core i5-2500K because I have one and have been able to test for a few months now. For a new HD, I usually stick with Seagate, they have never let me down. For the FX8170, not only are they probably going to charge an arm and a leg for it, but I don't really trust a CPU that has a stock clock of 3.9Ghz, that's a little to high to start with.

To much testing involved to let processor leave the plant with a possibility of burning your chip out. Besides 3.9 Ghz is necessary to get Dolphin really moving anyhow. |
