New super mario bros multiplayer issue

Hello so me and my friend are trying to play New super mario bros, all of our controllers are set up and working, Tested in single player, But when we go online and try to play with 3 players they cant press 2 to lock in and play, I can press buttons but they cant. Anyone know why?
