Well, yeah, ePSXe is obsolete nowadays. PCSX-R does everything better and it's open-source.
Of course if you're looking for accurate emulation then you have two choices:
1) XEBRA (atrocious UI, but still the most accurate, too bad its closed source and dead)
2) mednafen PSX core through RetroArch (it's pcsx based afaik, software rendering, not sure if it has already surpassed xebra or not; thanks to retroarch you can use multipass shaders, f.e CRT + NTSC, scanlines, etc.)
3) (ARM platforms) PCSX-reARMed found in RetroArch for android and pandora project. Super fast and at the same time renders pixel-perfect gfx.
Speaking of gfx enhancements, they are all garbage. Stay away from any form of AA, filtering, rendering at higher res. etc, only certain shaders are acceptable.
