Netplay latency, what's acceptable?

Hi all,

I've been trying to play Mario Kart Wii with a friend through the Internet following all the guidelines from the wiki but we've been only able to get it running at about 20% speed, enabling dual core helps a little bit but causes the well known sync issues. Our computer is exactly the same except for the VGA.

The only thing I can think of about being the issue is the latency, since we're over 1200 miles away from each other the ping fluctuates between 60ms and 80ms, have tried hosting the game from either sides but nothing changed so far. 35/3Mbps and 50/30Mbps Internet connections.

Is netplay doable with this latency or is there anything we can do to make it work slightly better?
