Netplay in Mario Kart

Hi,
I tried to get a Netplay-Session started with Mario Kart on Wii with one of my friends. We have the exact same copy of the Game and same settings and he is always able to join me.
Starting the Game tho he is unable to use his controller. I tried every port if GC or Wiimote . Nothing seems to work. does anybody know what we can do about it? or maybe help me set things up

Make sure that you both have 2 controllers enabled and have set up the correct ones respectively.
