Netplay controllers not working

We are both using 4.0.2 and I do have two controllers enabled in game cube under configuration.

Are you turning on the Wii remotes under "configure pads" in the netplay game hosting window? If you don't specifically turn them on when you host, they will be off by default, even if they're turned on for offline play. That said, NSMB always went out of sync when I tried playing it online, but I can't say for sure that it wouldn't work for you.
