Hi there.

I´m coming here to ask you for help, as one day I accidentally activated SkyDrive on W8.1. Evey time I boot up the laptop, the SkyDrive service host starts. (I always stop it on Task Manager since it causes lags on multiplayer-online PC games).

There´s other thing, dunno if it has anthing to do with SD: Shortly after booting, the OS changes automatically from the Start screen and opens Windows Explorer on its main section (where all the used HDDs and user folders appear).

I would like to make this thing to stop forever, but don´t know how. Any one knows how to do it?

Any -helpful- input is well received.

Thanks in advance. Smile

The first thing cannot be stopped without making the service never start. I don't think it's very easy to do, since macro$haft think they know what's best for everyone and force you to always have some things that aren't needed running, making the services not disableable.

Also, why would you not want it to go to desktop automatically at startup/shortly after startup? Do you have a tablet, or something?

Sure I can help you with that.

Go to your Task Manager. Select the Startup tab. Right-click on Skydrive and select Disable. Done.
I think that Windows Explorer opening into the My PC section is about the same thing. See if there also is Windows Explorer in your Startup list, disable it the same way.

LOL; me, a noob just helped a pro. Big Grin

Windows Explorer is what runs all windows UI. Keeping it from starting up will make windows unusable.

You aren´t getting it, kin (well, sort of; I didn´t explain myself as much as I would liked to).

Windows Explorer forces Windows (it didn´t before, though) to automatically open the window you´ll see in attachment of this reply. And I´m asking for help to make that thing stop since it´s kind of annoying (I have some games that work on the "characteristic" W8 mode instead of others that would normally open in Desktop mode).

If you look closer to my first post, you´ll see I mentioned I have a laptop. A notebook PC, to be more specific. Tongue

@410172: I didn´t found SkyDrive there, in the place you mentioned.

Maybe there´s a way through the command "msconfig"?

(Once again, here´s the image on the attachment; and sorry, it´s in Spanish). Tongue

I know what you're talking about. I just think that the tablet mode of the operating system is inferior, and desktop mode should be cherished instead of cursed.

I can say now that Google is your best friend

Either:
1. Remove skydrive (in add or remove programs)
or
2. Disable skydrive startup on boot (see post 7 for instructions on how to do this, it's in the applications settings)

Whenever you don't know how to do something just google it.

SkyDrive/OneDrive became a system component in Windows 8.1 (like Internet Explorer), so you can't remove it and you won't find it in Add or Remove programs neither in the list of startup programs (like you would find when installing OneDrive in Windows 7 and older). AFAIK there's no way of stopping it running (and there's no service -- you start the OS and something trigger OneDrive, which keeps a background process running)...

@DJBarry004: msconfig is present in Windows 8+ but you can't disable startup apps through it anymore -- it'll tell you to go to the startup tab in Task Manager

Oh man (Jhonn), what a shame. Well, I think I still can deal with it if that´s the case. Tongue

I will also fix the laptop´s touchscreen somehow, it´s getting more crazy these days and can´t play well with all those touches on the right side on the screen.
