Hi everyone,
I'll go to university next month and I'd like to buy a notebook for this. I've no clue about the market situation in that area and thus felt like asking on the Dolphin forums for some help xD
Anyway, due to the area of application, I have various requirements for the notebook, in decreasing importance: (I'll be going to a university in Erlangen, Germany if that matters anywhere)
a) Are these requirements realistic enough?
b) Is there anything you'd change about the requirements? Putting the requirements higher/lower etc? Or did I miss anything?
c) Any recommendation about notebooks to buy which would fit these criteria? I'll probably manage to look for these by myself as well though, a) and b) are more important.
Thanks in advance for any advice

- needs to have a LONG battery life. That is, it might not run out of power during a university day... I'm not sure how many hours the battery needs to last though (university life is quite new to me ), any advice on what number of hours is sensible and/or a minimum in that area? I guess 4 hours should suffice for the beginning, I could still buy a better battery lateron.. (stupid question: Do universities allow recharging notebooks anywhere, e.g. in the library or something?)
- should NOT have an Intel GPU. I want to use Linux on the notebook, and intel drivers are crap. I'd prefer AMD cards, but NVIDIA GPUs are fine as well. Doesn't need to be able to run 3d apps, I just need basic 2d acceleration with a low power consumption and without much noise.
- Should be QUIET enough to not disturb me or anyone around me while working.
- Display size: Big enough to work with it. Anything above or with 13' should be fine I guess. If it's not a widescreen, it should be able to use a resolution of at very least 1280x1024 (1600x1200 would be better though); if it's a widescreen, it should have at least 1000 pixels vertically. Is that realistic?
- CPU: no idea tbh... Fast enough to not experience any serious lags when working with office programs or LaTeX. Any recommendations?
- RAM: I guess at least 2 GB, same as for the CPU
- hard disk size: Nothing fancy, even my desktop (which is a dual boot of win7 and linux) barely needs more than 150 gb. i.e. 150 gb should be perfectly fine. (Those 150 gb include 50 GB of Wii game dumps )
- price: Anything up to 700 euros. I'd like it to be closer at 500 euros though..
- what about the weight? what's sensible for daily routine here?
- Apart from university work, I only want to use the notebook for watching DVDs on my TV. Guess that shouldn't be a problem, fwiw I of course need a DVD driver for that though.
- Additionally the notebook needs to have at least 2 USB ports.
- WLAN is necessary as well.
