Ok, well I'm connected with my buddy, we're playing SSBB, but when we're choosing characters in game all I see is just him controlling the game. I can't join in for some reason. How do i make it so I can join too?
Need a little help with netplay, almost got it

That means for 2 players, both of you need to go to Config > Gamecube and set Port 1 and 2 to Standard Controller. I don't believe you need to use Configure Pads in the Netplay window. It should default to using GCPad 1 for the appropriate slot in multiplayer. All you need to do is to make sure GCPad > Pad 1 is setup how you like it. 08-26-2011, 01:05 PM

After I uploaded a few brawl netplay videos I've been getting netplay questions so I've been trying my best to answer them. Hopefully if there are more people using netplay, more interest will be generated in improving it ![]() As for the FPS drop, if none of your other settings have changed and it only happens in netplay, I think it has to do with your internet speeds. I would try increasing the buffer and seeing if you get better frames. Try to keep it as low as possible or else there will be a huge input delay. Making sure neither of you are uploading/downloading on your connection will be helpful as well. 08-26-2011, 01:34 PM

I tried increasing buffer, but the fps gain was pretty much negated with the delay it introduces. Guess I'll have to find a balance. He does live pretty far away from me(I'm in NJ, he's in Illionois) so maybe that's why. edit: here's a pic of my netplay window. For some reason mine says 7714M and his doesn't, and yet I can't find a 7714M anywhere. Is it because i'm 64bit and he's 32bit? ![]() double edit: could it be his system dragging our performance down? My specs: Phenom II X4 965 @ 4ghz 4gb ddr3 1600 ram GTX 560 ti (i'm hosting the game) His Specs Pentium Dual Core E2180 1 or 2gb ddr2 GT 440. He does live pretty far away from me(I'm in NJ, he's in Illionois) so maybe that's why. I'd avoid using something like Hamachi/Tunngle. My friend I was doing netplay with was from Canada and I live in OH, and although it pretty much required 100% network utilization and a bit of buffering, we were able to have some fun playing. (I doubt anything less than LAN will give you unnoticable input lag) The reason why you couldn't connect directly is most likely having to deal with firewalls/routers, and there are many guides online on Port Forwarding and such that deal with this topic. Also you should try hosting yourself, and seeing if your friend can connect to you. Technically the host has to worry about more of his network settings, and, someone correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the host benefits the most from having good internet speeds. EDIT: I have no idea what the M stands for but the 7714 stands for the revision number. I also don't know how much this will affect anything. I would also check to see if your friend can run brawl using his current netplay settings at 60fps. If he can do that, I think he wouldn't slow you guys down. 08-26-2011, 01:51 PM

Ah ok i disabled firewall for now and he connected to me thru my external IP, it's still a bit slow..i guess that's where the buffer comes in? Also, network utilization only tops out at .25% :/ is there any way to force more? 08-26-2011, 01:57 PM

Also when I said network utilization I wasn't talking about what the task manager says under Networking (I may have been a bit misleading). I meant that if anyone else was on our connections using the internet we got frame drops. Anyways, the gameplay videos I have up I believe had buffers in the low teens. Its not the same as playing on the same computer, but fun nonetheless. 08-26-2011, 01:59 PM

When it says to disable dual core and audio throttle, is that really advised? I found it runs tons slower when on or off netplay with dual core off. 08-26-2011, 02:15 PM
I believe that having audio throttle and dual core tend to lead to a lot of desyncing issues.
http://forums.dolphin-emu.org/showthread.php?tid=18716 is a thread about netplay and dual core. Audio throttle I don't think really improves performance (but I don't know for fact) and can be replaced by setting Framelimit to auto. Dual core does improve performance, and I might have even been able to do some netplay with it turned on, but its harder to guarantee that both of you are looking at the same game. This is all just coming from personal experience though, it would be better if a developer answers this question. |
