I read over the setup guide for Dolphin and didn't find it very helpful. While it tells what settings usually should and shouldn't be enabled, it doesn't explain what the settings actually do. I'm sorry if this sounds like a complaint, its really not. I love this emulator and would just like some more information as to how it works. I think if there was an explanation of what each setting did and why it should or shouldn't be enabled, it would not only help me but all other members to get the most out of this emulator.
More detailed setup guide

That sounds fine fin but did you actually invest some time and actually go and try to find out what each setting did/does? Most of the settings in dolphin already gives a definition to its function and those that aren't are pretty easy to find out in the forums. It would be handy to have a more thorough compilation of each setting but at same time your question comes off as a "loot and scoot" especially when you made a couple of other threads asking questions that would have been easily answered by actually taking some time and searching for the answers.

I think if there was an explanation of what each setting did and why it should or shouldn't be enabled, it would not only help me but all other members to get the most out of this emulator. I created the guide when I was bored one day at work... I didn't exactly have time to list out what every single setting does... Besides, as of right now, every game has different setting requirements. So it's technically impossible for a perfect guide to exist. The guide I created is supposed to be a quick guide for MOST games... It's not for all games, but all I tried to do with the guide was to explain the crucial steps for the newbies, without confusing them. A lot of the settings can be misinterpreted if they aren't worded correctly, which is another reason I left out many details. But aside from all that, if you want to know what the settings do, just do a search on the forums. I'm sure the questions have been asked and answered. And if not, post a question... in a NEW Thread... With a descriptive subject, and you'll get an answer. The simple fact remains that 90% of the traffic here is just interested in getting it running, they don't care how it works, only that it works. This is what this guide is geared at, if you are looking for more advanced answers, that means you have a better understanding of the program and in which case it's not hard for you to click the search button and find it on your own. I have no intention of changing my guide, unless it needs to be updated for settings changes, which I try to keep it updated as best I can, but I work 2 jobs, so time is of the essence. Also, please don't associate the emulator and the guide together, Although I try to make contributions as best I can, I am not a dev, nor an admin or affiliated with anyone that runs any of this in any way. I did this out of my own free will to help the forums and prevent lots of newbie questions, I'm sorry that it didn't help you, but the emulator is not at fault here. (If there's any fault to be placed at all) 10-17-2009, 08:40 AM
I guess I did make this post a little haphazardly. I've had trouble with the search function on this and other forums, so I have a tendency to post questions I can't find quick answers to, rather than spend time searching. Sorry about that.
jedi, when u say that Dolphin already gives a definition to most of its functions are you referring to the info that gets displayed when you roll over them in the interface, or information that is in the source code? unknownforce, I never meant to hate on ur guide, and I wasn't implying that you should change it. I understand that most people just want enough info to get Dolphin up and running. However, as a fellow programmer I personally would like to know the specifics, and I think it would be convenient to have it all in one place. If the information on all these features does in fact exist in this forum, I guess I can compile a guide myself. Ill be sure to post whatever I come up with. |
