Modern dolphin netplay is confusing with saves, and deletes saves sometimes

When I join my friend on netplay, and play various games, we have fun. But sometimes, with mario kart wii as an example, we have to continuously start a new file and it never shows the "writing save" text in the top left. Another friend who has put so much time into time trials and never wrote it down, because the times are in the game. After a session when I hosted with the default settings and he joined, when he went to check his save, it was gone. I don't want to repeat this incident, and actually save things. A lot of other people encountering the same problem simply had to "make sure Write Save/SD Data, Load Wii Save, and Sync Save is on." But that's simply not what it shows on more recent builds.
