Buy me a membership, and I'll join in. Otherwise, I get too much contact with it via siblings to want to throw any more of my family's money its way. Plus, all I'd do would be make a giant redstone CPU, and I already have a CPU right next to me anyway, in my real-life computer.

Damn straight. The most complicated thing I made before I stopped playing was a 4 bit full adder (binary of course). I plan to rebuild it as well as a decimal -> binary converter to act as a frontend for stupid people.

In all seriousness $27 is a bit ridiculous for something as basic as minecraft. Luckily I bought it back when it was in alpha for $10. The game honestly hasn't improved that much since then anyways so I don't understand why they keep hiking the price up higher and higher. Oh right.....mojang.....I almost forgot.

The game is seriously the best tool I have ever seen for teaching basic circuit design. Obviously it becomes a bit less practical than something like logisim when your design grows more complicated.

Also the website is apparently down right now so even if I wanted to buy it for you I couldn't (thanks mojang). I still love minecraft but man do I hate mojang. Which is why I highly recommend that you try the above method.

Someone gave me a cracked version of an old version once, but it didn't work properly. They gave me the .exe, and not any of its dependencies, so it booted, got not very far, and then gave me a bazillion x.dll missing messages.

I also thought it might be possible to make a Skyrim mod which made it nearly indiscernible from minecraft. I don't think it would be hard wprk, just probably more work than buying a full licence for the gamebryo engine, and building it up from scratch.

That someone wasn't me, though, so that's slightly less relevant.

Why not look for it yourself instead of trusting some idiot?

That [site that must not be named] has literally dozens of [word that cannot be mentioned here] available that are as easy to install as following an installer by clicking next.

You won't get very far. And anyone who thinks otherwise fails to grasp the complexity of minecrafts engine. Especially the ridiculously detailed and complicated procedural generation.

A small team with a couple of years might be able to pull it off.

That was just a basic "place and destroy blocks" mod. It barely had anything to do with minecraft.

If I was making that mod, it would be with an effectively locked seed (ie the whole world is built on one seed for everyone, so no variation).

This would then leave block-block interactions, which could just about be scripted.

Finally, you've got the 'alive' mobs, and a lot of that could be done with NPCs, animals, and magic.

After all that, you've got the general look and feel right, and if you push it further, you'll be eaten alive by copyright lawyers.

Also, about the extra-legitimate copy, I hadn't actually even heard of minecraft back then (it was a while ago), and I was assuming it was some potentially crap flash-type game that just had silly DRM. If I decide I want some software enough to bother getting it, then I usually can be bothered buying it, or at least getting it in some sale at a later date. I don't, however, like buying 2 copies of a game for no good reason, which is why someone may struggle to find my original Star Wars Battlefront 2 NTSC disk, but will easily be able to find my PAL copy if they know where my PS2 games are.
