What is Melee HD?

Melee HD has long been in popular demand as a graphics project for Smash Melee.

To retexture a game with as many textures as Melee is a huge undertaking. If just one person tries to take on this task, the project will probably die. However similar projects, like this Ocarina of Time pack, have succeeded when the effort for the retexture is crowdsourced throughout the community. We have for this game one of the most passionate communities out there, and so we can make this happen.

I really want Melee HD to be a reality, so I've translated that want into effort, gotten it off the ground, and made for it a GitHub repository. I've submitted to this repo about 300 textures so far. This is not a finished endeavor, but this is a foundation upon which the passionate can build. This is also a nonprofit project, and I don't see a penny from its promotion nor from my work. This is all done for the love of the game.

The future of this project depends on the effort of the community. I'm speaking directly to you. Yes, you: the person reading this right now. Let's make Melee HD a reality.

People posting texture projects to General Discussion are following the rules of that subforum, as on that subforum there's a topic titled "Read This First!" in which the following quote is posted:

Quote:Users with 100+ posts are granted posting permissions to this forum without prior approval from Forum Staff. For those users with less than 100 posts, please make your thread (following the template, of course) and post it in the General Discussion Forum and alert a member of Forum Staff (myself, Super Moderators, Moderators) via PM. We will then inspect the thread and move it to this forum.

Moved to the HD Texture Forum. I see you're using GitHub, that's new around here. Hopefully that makes everything more manageable. Good luck with your project btw. Wink

Thanks for the well-wishes, Shonumi.

At the moment we have a few hundred textures, over ten people who've pledged to make art, six contributing artists, and three who've expressed that they're in it for the long game.

It's not as big as it could be, since it's WIP and has just started. It'll grow as time goes on. For those who want to monitor progress more closely, be sure to check meleehd.boards.net.

The series symbols vectored by uncleiroh have now been merged into the GitHub. I'll cross-post them to this thread for those who are interested.

If this shall be a long-term project, you've missed to release it under a licence Wink

I don't believe in exercising control over anything that doesn't improve the project, so if people want to use the art involved for their own purposes, more power to them. As I see it, the ownership of intellectual property can sometimes stifle progress and work against the common good.

I do mention on the forum news bar, in a subforum description, in the interactive guide, and in the "Read this first!" topic that all textures submitted to the forum are released into the public domain. I've mentioned this in some of the outreach I've done on deviantART and elsewhere, and I've further made sure in both public and private communications that all of my most prolific contributors are aware of it. Once Tino makes the updates to Ishiiruka that I've discussed here with him, I'll probably integrate some variation of Stallman's GPL into the GitHub before those involved with the project reupload their textures as SVG.

In a legal sense, I do try to keep everything aboveboard. However, were lawyers (say, from Nintendo) to come for me, they would have a hard time serving me a subpoena. Since I have no plans to personally benefit from this project, there's no legal person nor country of origin associated with the MeleeHD identity.

Thank you, and I also respect the work I've seen you do. On the subject, would you have time to backport your custom texture format to the last x86 version of Dolphin? I've met dA people who want to contribute to this project, but who aren't keen on sending their work to an x64 user to convert then return to sender.
