Mario Kart Double Dash Netplay: Drift Boost does not work correctly when teamed up

My friends and I have been playing Double Dash over netplay. For the most part, it has worked fine.

However, we have this very bizarre issue where if any of the players are teamed up together, jostling the left joystick left and right to initiate boosting while in a drift is given to the backseat driver.
I.E. Player 1 and Player 2 are in the same kart, player 1 begins a drift and tries to jostle their joystick to initiate boosting it does not work, however if Player 2 jostles their joystick it will work.

Furthermore, any player that is by themselves (i.e. is both the driver and backseat driver) can drift boost just fine.

We have noticed that netplay seems to draw the config for port 1 from everyone, we had thought that maybe each player had to configure on a different controller port,
but that doesn't work as it just seems to use port 1 config for everyone.

Does anyone know what the issue could be?

I'm pretty sure that's just how DD works. Never played DD on real hardware though, so I might be wrong.

I have the physical disk, I will verify tomorrow.  But I used to play with a friend all the time, don't remember ever having him do the boosting.  In fact, I did everything related to driving, he was always backseat.

As someone who still regularly plays Double Dash with friends, this is indeed just how the game works.

Yep, confirmed this myself last time I played with friends.

I can't believe it, I just tested using the physical disk/Gamecube... this is how it works. That's really odd, I don't recall that ever being a thing. I've played with my little bro before, it's possible I instructed him that when I go around corners, he jostles the joystick back and forth... but wow, that's astonishing.
