You'll hit a point where either the temperatures or voltages get too high to safely raise the clock any higher. As long as you know the expected clock speeds your CPU can handle and the maximum safe voltage and temp, it shouldn't be too hard to find the right setting for your system. My i5-2500k went all the way to 4.1ghz without even requiring a single voltage bump, .8 free ghz just like that.
