I hate it. Direct X is one of the only things Micro Shafter ever did right and it will fade away with Steam being pushed to *NIX platforms.
Programmers have a choice what AS I to use and the world is moving to open standards.
I remember a company in the late 90s that created an open platform for 3d rendering that translated calls to all known APIs and even mixed in software render before if that platform did not support a feature in a mixed type of mode. I don't recall what ever happened to that project, but Open Go seems to becoming the defacto fast.
Regardless, in my personal opinion portability of code is of the highest importance and I am highly impressed with the progress of this project.
