I want to build a pc that can run dolphin at decent speeds but I can't make money easily because I am 14 and I don't want to wait 2 years to get a part time job. I know I will need an Intel processor but I want a core i series but not an i7 unless there is one for extremely cheep. I don't plan to overclock because I probably won't need it. I don't have any computers that can be upgraded because one is a laptop, one is an Intel NUC with the exact same specs and a 2014 mac mini. The mac mini probably would do great if I put windows on there but I want to keep it an OS X only machine. If there was an unofficial backend for metal then I wouldn't need to build a new computer. I know a lot about computers so you don' need to explain what everything is. I don't mind using an i3 at first but I probably will upgrade to i5 eventually. A pentium might even do the trick until I upgrade so if you know of a pentium model that can run dolphin OK than let me know. I don't need help with the motherboard, hard drive or psu. Graphics card I might be OK on because I found a GT 420 for $40 and the case I need one that will run dolphin well. (Just kidding the case I am good on but feel free to suggest some cool looking budget cases preferably micro ATX) I just need a cheap cpu and I know I won't ind an i5 in that range. I probably will have to start with a pentium and upgrade to an i5 later. Also, I am good on monitors. I have 2 great ones although I might not use them both at once unless I can have one running off integrated graphics but if the cpu doesn't have any, that is fine because I only need one. Thanks

I am looking for something like this. will it run dolphin at decent framerates? Pentium G3258

Yep! you can overclock that sucker to 4.0 ghz without voltage bumps and be just fine for pretty much everything Dolphin plays. Higher even you don't mind bumping voltages. A GT 420 will be too slow though for anything above probably 2x internal resolution.
Try this. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4MsLr7 Pick your own case and storage. (The cooler is rather tall. But it's incredibly cheap and lets you overclock without having to care.) That build will run emulators as well as high end machines just fine. 05-26-2016, 03:45 AM

I might end up keeping the pentium for a few years before I upgrade it if it will overclock that well. That graphics card is great too. Definitely will last me a long time. Also, I will finally be able to run shaders on minecraft too. Very helpful. 05-26-2016, 04:01 AM
I have added the build to my account and added the OS, case and Storage but I don't know if the cooler will fit. I think it will but i am not sure.

I did some research and it is reported to fit in smaller cases so I am good there. Also, I might not afford to buy windows right away so I will have to use Linux for a short time meaning I will be temporarily limited to OpenGL but I have heard OpenGL runs better on Nvidia cards than directx. I will eventually buy windows but how well will it run on linux. Using Windows without a product key for a while is also an option so keep that in mind as well. I am not sure about using Windows no product key for awhile because I am not sure if it is completely legal. I believe you do get a grace period for that so I might use windows without a product key during that while I save up for a key.

Dolphin really runs well on Linux with a NVIDIA card and the proprietary driver. (nouveau -- the open-source driver -- works too, but I think its performance is not as good)

For Kepler cards (Like that 750ti), nouveau is about 60-75% of proprietary drivers in performance, at least the last time I asked one of the nouveau devs a few months ago.
Do note, that GPU is starting to show it's age now two generations behind current gen cards, but if you're not trying to play the latest and greatest games then that 750ti will do just fine for awhile. That pentium will also be fine for some games outside of Dolphin. Minecraft sure. But again. Your system may struggle on the latest and greatest games. You probably already know this though when you were looking for a cheap system. 05-26-2016, 05:21 AM

Hopefully it will natively support my wifi dongle. I don't have wired internet in my room yet. I believe it works natively in Ubuntu but I might use another distro because I feel the Ubuntu UI is a bit outdated so I hope I can find one that will support it natively although I feel like that will be easy these days because currently it works out of the box on windows too so maybe it dowsn't need drivers anymore. 05-26-2016, 05:27 AM

If it runs minecraft with shaders (which it will) than it will handle everything else I do. I am 100% sure it will run Unreal engine (correct me if I am wrong) because it can run without directx on a 1.4 ghz dual core i5 with intel hd 4000 so no issues there although the pentium might not be as fast despite the much higher clock speed because it lacks hyperthreading but no big deal. Edit: even if it can't run unreal engine, I don't need to because it someho runs really well on my mac that can't run dolphin above 1x resolution. |
