Looks like someone has found out the clock speeds of the Wii U, through hacking.

https://twitter.com/marcan42 - read for information

I don't know what to comment if that actually is true, 1.25 GHz for the CPU clock speed and 550 MHz GPU core clock is so bare for today's standards.

Anandtech claims the GPU is built on the AMD RV7xx core.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6465/nintendo-wii-u-teardown
The fastest GPus made on RV7xx is 4890.

Comparing to Xbox 360 which uses AMD Xenos (RV520):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos_(graphics_chip)
This is a chip based on ATI X1800.

A 4890 is about 3x faster than a X1800, so I would not worry just yet.

Quote:So yes, the Wii U CPU is nothing to write home about, but don't compare it clock per clock with a 360 and claim it's much worse. It isn't.

Well even though the IPC is going to be much better on the WiiU cpus OoO cores the increase in IPC won't be enough, especially with one core being reserved for the OS. The CPU will still end up being weaker than the Xenon which is a shame (although it's certainly going to be leaps and bound better than the Wiis cpu). Considering at least two major developers have stated that they had trouble with the WiiUs cpu performance and hinted at it being weaker than the Xenon I'm not completely surprised, though I did expect it to be much higher than that.

I could be wrong but it would need nearly triple the IPC of the Xenon core design just to break even and in today's world that's borderline impossible.

They still haven't said jack shit about the GPU architecture and nothing beyond the basics of the CPU architecture so we're still a bit in the dark here. I really wish they would just tell us already. It's not like it's going to dramatically impact their sales, and we'll get it eventually either way once the console is hacked. It's just bad business to keep everything about your hardware a secret in my opinion.

Nintendo is worried that if they say the specs, the number counting fanboys will storms out and go "SEE it sucks! X is smaller than Y!". Of course, that is going to happen anyway, so it's a rather moot. It's just Nintendo's way of doing things I guess.

Yeah that's probably why they keep it a secret. The clock speeds sounds kinda right to me however.

The "X is smaller than Y! Wii U sucks!" has already been going on in several communities ever since that guy posted the clock speed. Sometimes I hate people.

I wouldn't go as far saying the Wii U sucks, it will probably be good once some of the heavy titles is launched in the future.
Personally I'm not gonna buy it for a crap load of other reasons. With all the games and consoles I already have, I see no reason for me to commit to yet another console. I wanna start spending my money on something else and stop continue waiting for new games. I wanna be free from that.

I'm probably getting a Wii U towards the end of its lifespan if the library looks good at that point. Wii U hasn't really done anything to appeal to me yet.
