Ok, I got home from work 3 weeks ago and went to take out my laptop harddrive. The internal part of the HD fell out(somehow the case wasn't attached/closed). It fell 4 feet to the tile floor. Well I put the harddrive in its case and into the laptop ...and of coarse it failed. Last night I cut it on and it boots! But it's horribly slow. Well I finally get disk defrag working and I defragment it, it was at 17%, and now it is running like it did before. I'm wondering, did disk defrag fix it or did I just get lucky or what just happened? I know that a HD, with out a case on, falling 4 feet shouldn't work anymore, but it is.

Maybe only some sectors were defect, and the defrag moved the data out of the affected regions at luck? Either way, if you have valuable data on the drive, I recommend to immediately backup it; I'd also recommend not to store anything valuable only on that drive in the future. I wouldn't consider it fixed, it's probably broken but you didn't notice it yet.

I had my ssd fell down and I attempted to grab it back up but instead I hit it, causing it fall down swiftly and knocked on the hard floor, luckily it still works. If it was HDD... it will certainly not going to work anymore.

So if you are going to replace your HDD for your laptop then I would suggest you get a SSD.

Trust me, you don't want anymore bad luck, right? Tongue

contrary to popular stupid belief, a hdd can take a drop to the floor and continue to work properly... as long as it wasn't in operation at the time.

Might, or might not. It could also drop to the floor while in operation, and still work. I think a very important factor in this is the type of the floor.

Well it was turned off when it did, so maybe thats' why its working. I used hdtune's scanner and it returned no bad sectors.... I was surprised. I got really lucky.
