Laptop/Desktop Conversation
View New Posts | View Today's Posts

Poll: Is there a reason to buy a desktop PC when a laptop can be used on-the-go and as a desktop?
I don't need to buy two computers when a laptop can also act as a desktop.
Yes, laptops aren't good for everything.
I haven't made up my mind yet.
I'm happy with any good computer
I have loads of money, I can buy as many laptops or desktops as I want.
I don't care.

Yes you can

newer Laptops dont have "pcmcia" i dont know where you have seen this old shit, that was in the USB 1.0 time where the ports where to slow
... but there are a lot of USB Surround Sound Devices...

I'm sorry, i couldn't hear you over how WRONG you are. It may not be PCMCIA, but it is the direct descendant of the technology, and USB has massive latency compared to expresscard

Oh, and

YES, you can.

NaturalViolence Wrote:Then we must have a misunderstanding. I thought this thread was a broad thread to talk about anything related to desktops vs. laptops. Price and performance are major issues that effect peoples decisions, why can't we bring that topic into the discussion?

Judging from the earlier posts, I got the impression we were supposed to be having anything but a general laptops vs. desktop thread, at least having something narrower in scope, such as what sort of tasks laptop hardware was capable of (gaming was brought up and discussed). Yet this has exactly turned into a laptops vs. desktops thread, which is perfectly acceptable to me.

I'm only saying that I didn't take price and performance into account when I said hardware didn't matter regarding the topic of what laptop hardware is capable of. That is altogether different from saying we shouldn't or can't talk about price and performance in this thread, as we have been doing for a while now. No one ever said those subjects don't belong here.

If after reading my latest walls of text and that's what you've taken from them, I'm not going to bother to elaborate anymore. Lets just say that we obviously agree to disagree and that I'm pretty burnt out taking about this. But you guys by all means, continue on. I may jump in here or there when the time is right.

If we care about surround sound, are we remembering that most modern laptops have an HDMI output, with 7.1 surround sound. Also, do people care about external/add on sound cards, as from what I've experienced (which isn't much) they don't make sounds sound noticeably better, unless there's no sound output already in the form needed.

First: I've not seen a high-end laptop in the last 3-5 years with an express card. Also LOL at that laptop and Intel HD 3000. Good luck.
Second, running that many drives through 2 eSATA connections (Once again assuming express card support) is going to slow things down out the [pg forum].

Depends on your ears and the quality of your speakers.

I never said a Laptop can't do anything a Desktop can... Laptops have always been able to do everything a desktop can.... Desktops have always, and will always be faster at it than a laptop.

Laptops take Power (battery), Cooling, and portability as their priorities. Desktops prioritize brute force.

Like I said, I HAVE a Core i7/HD 5870 laptop with 6gb of RAM. Yes, it does a lot of stuff, but my Desktop does EVERYTHING faster. Not to mention my laptop only gets about an hour and a half of battery life.

I already said what the performance differences are between the two. CryEngine editor runs at 12fps on my laptop, and stutters like hell. It runs at ~200fps on my desktop. Photoshop brushes lag (especially with dual-texture, and huge ones) on my laptop, they don't on my desktop. Sketchup lags past a few thousand tris (as do Maya and such) on my laptop.... runs fine on desktop. Dolphin runs better on my desktop. My laptop only supports 2 monitors.... including the one built-in. 17"? No thank you. My desktop supports 6. I'm planning on using 4. If I needed (and I don't) I could upgrade to support up to 21 monitors on this computer.... and it would run fine.

And all of this fails to mention that my laptop cost almost as much as my desktop. Tongue

Another *very* important thing is the fact that it's near impossible to upgrade anything on a laptop. I used to upgrade a lot (when I had a good paying job...), and it would have been cost-prohibitive with a laptop. (920 -> 980x, 260 -> 260 SLI -> 480 SLI -> 480 Quad SLI -> 480 Tri SLI, 6GB -> 12GB RAM, and a heck of a lot of HDD upgrades).
Back from the grave and working on textures.
