Are you talking about netplay or BBA? Either way I think it should work

The game's built-in LAN stuff (via the BBA, the Broadband Adapter) is a pain to set up correctly, and our resident netplay expert JMC47 still hasn't ever succeeded in setting it up, so you can probably ignore that.

Dolphin's netplay works well as long as everyone's got a half-decent internet connection and a fast enough CPU to run the game at full speed *with* settings that drastically increase the CPU load, e.g. DSP LLE (which usually isn't necessary, but for this game it is) and single-core mode. It's unlikely that your MacBook fits that requirement. Netplay also generally requires a high degree of competency and collaboration between the players, since everyone's settings need to be almost exactly the same (the few exceptions include graphics backend and enhancements – not hacks, those can still break things) and everyone needs to use the exact same memory card file unless you have memcard syncing enabled. Any issues you run into will be either your fault, a friend's fault, or someone's computer being too slow for the game with the ridiculously-intensive settings.

tl;dr, netplay is usually a lot of work to set up correctly and may not even work well on your hardware. If you're up for it, though, follow the guide (and make sure your friends do too): https://dolphin-emu.org/docs/guides/netplay-guide/

I've had BBA working on this game, but only when running two dolphin instances on the same computer. Even once you get the game instances to see each other, the game requires really low network latency, and dolphin's current implementation (based on openvpn TAP) just can't cope with this.

Edit: To be more clear, the game essentially works how dolphin's netplay does: it broadcasts sampled gamepad input data each time it is polled from the hardware. However, dolphin cannot manage this connection at a high level, so the game's code must deal with any synchronization differences between each "gamecube" in the game. As it happens, the game's code includes NO error correction for stuff like that, so it breaks as soon as dolphin instances go out of sync (where sync includes network transmit).

I managed to play 8 player Mario Kart on a single computer (2500k @ 4.3ghz), @ 2x1080p with 2xIR.
You wouldn't want to see the insane amount of hubs and ps3 controllers, this was exactly 50 weeks ago (i think dolphin 4.0).

But it crashes on average after 3 rounds, does the new dual core determinism work better, or is the BBA still unable to keep up?

Seems to be quite improved, cpu was hanging around 90% last time. Now about 65%, haven't crashed so far in the first 5 rounds.
