Hi everyone,
I am having a pretty unusual problem with SSBM, that is that inputs sometimes don´t react at all. First of all I am using a keyboard and not a pad and for now I have no means to test with a pad, I might be able to do so later.
How to describe the problem... It´s hard as inputs sometimes don´t react pretty randomly, I have been able to make out a pattern and I think I know what the underlying issue might be, more to that below. It literaly happens at random, twice even in the menu that the A button would not react at all. The more complex the moves the more it happens but as said even basic commands like the A or B buttons for instance are sometimes ignored completely, it´s as if I hadn´t pressed them. The problem also seems to worsen the more enemy computers are present, however for some reason the Target Test is a big mess too despite no additional NPCs.
Already researched the problem on Google and in the forums. The only viable piece of information I could find is that USB 3.0 might cause input problems in SSBM. Since my PC is new I don´t have an old USB 2.0 hub and can´t test if that may be the actual issue.
While using 4 player mode in VS. Mode to get up the combined playing time I noticed a clear bug which I can reproduce at any given time:
When I keep the shift button(turbo modus) pressed I can only duck but not attack using the A button. Yes I can duck but when I then press A nothing happens. If I then release the shift button I can do a normal down + A attack, which however is for some reason NOT possible when I keep the shift button pressed at the same time. Since I thought this may be a pattern, I tested it with other moves too while holding the shift button. Shift + up + A, shift + left/right + A as well as shift + up + B. However in these cases, it reacts normaly as it should which is weird, as this problem only seems to be with down + A in combination with the shift button.
Hence it is hard to make out a real pattern here. What seems to be the issue is that certain command combinations do not work like shift + down + A. And since SSBM requires very fast reaction and button pressing in all sorts of combinations there could be a ton of potencial for various other command conflicts here.
Another problem I noticed is inputs being active for up to a second despite no button pressed. For example: I jump while holding left or right to jump in a certain direction, when I then stop pressing left/right and press up +A to make this certain aerial move I would get the A + left/right aerial attack despite not pressing left/right for like a second and instead pressing up. It´s as if the emulator needs longer then it should to notice that a certain button is not pressed any longer.
The underlying issue seems to be that certain commands are ignored when there are too many at once, they somehow block each other out so that certain buttons just don´t work in that moment. That and apparently buttons keep being active for up to a second despite not being pressed any longer. The issue doesn´t appear in any other games, including F-Zero GX requiring equaly fast reflexes and more then 2 buttons at times even up to 4 actualy, literaly 0 issues there at all, only with SSBM. Same goes for any other games I own: No issues with input at all, everything reacts perfectly as it should.
FPS lag is not the issue either, I get a constant 60FPS in game and can even activate the turbomodus where it climbs up to 120 - 180 FPS depending on the map and graphic load. So FPS lag is definitely not an issue, not even small drops as they don´t happen either. I tried out a few graphics and emulator settings as well but that too made no difference.
It might be that USB 3.0 causes these command conflicts at too much inputs at once in certain combinations, but as said I have no means to test this with my PC, it´s literaly too new lol.
Is there anything I can do about this? Since another big fear I have is: I get an adapter and a pad and will be having the same problems with the pad due to USB 3.0 or whatever else causes this problem. Well at least I would be having a C-stick again with a pad, still if the underlying issue is not fixed the C-stick will be of little use to me and my gaming experience as the underlying issue might still be there.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Any additional data or screenshots you need?
My specs are as following:
Windows 10 Professional x64
AMD Sapphire Nitro RX 470
Intel Core I7 8700k
G.Skill Trident Z 2x 16gb
Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7(hence I only have USB 3.0 hubs or upwards)
Using the current stable 64 bit version 5.0 of Dolphin.
