Two things will cause that
1)a dirty pot(potentiometer)
2)a bad driver/firmware.
These black thinks are the pots, I seriously doubt that is your issue.

I don't know what you mean by windows drivers unless you are saying windows saw this controller as a human inter face device. I also recall mayflash didn't handle the L and R correctly and required you to download their new driver to make it work right. I think your issue lays here.
