I know dolphin isn't malware, but the site it's hosted on (mediashare?) has tried to install tool-kits on my computer twice before while downloading a new dolphin build.

Mamario hosts his builds on Mediafire, the official Dolphin builds are uploaded to the server that the Dolphin site and forum is hosted on as far as I know.

It's not just mamario's builds.Every build I've been linked to have been on mediashare, only V2.0 of dolphin is hosted on the main website, and it's not the best build when you want to play a particular game well (i.e Zelda:TP and MH3).

I bet that even if he compiles Dolphin, his av program will still detect a false positive on the exe.

Time for a new Anti-Virus, I've heard about quite a few issues with AVG flagging legitimate software as a virus, it's just a false positive. We went through the same thing with other members in the past and told them it was a false positive. Come to think of it, I think they were using AVG as well.

At least you can trust the stuff you compile on your own.
