It's a survival instinct that drives people to fear it which unfortunately none of us can really fully get rid of without completely rewiring our brain. So while we may say that we don't fear it (like I just did) when faced with a situation where you're about to die your survival instincts will kick and you will fear it again. The first thing your body will do is pump ridiculous quantities of epinephrine and norepinephrine into your system which will make you afraid. Unless it's a slow death like cancer that gives you time to adjust. This right here! I been close to dying two times or almost anyway. One time as a kid when I got hit by a car when I rode my bike getting the mail and one time 2 years ago when I was on a job on a steel mill. I've never been so scared in all my life. 11-03-2012, 03:49 AM

Only time I was ever close to death (presumably) was when I had pneumonia when I first started elementary schooling (1st Grade). It was around my birthday and my parents said I was in a bad way. Had a fever so high they had to cool me down with a tub full of cold water (I hated that part). In hindsight, they said I should have really been hospitalized instead of going to my birthday party at Discovery Zone. Bah, pneumonia's nothing to me, I've had it 5 times my entire life (the last time allowed me to stay home long enough to discover emulation, long story there).

Quote:What happened NV? What's your experiences? I'm not sure if "near death experience" is the proper term now that I think about it. I mean these are situations where I almost died but not necessary what people think of when I say "near death experience". People tend to equate that with situations where you have been legally dead for awhile and saw/felt something that you couldn't explain. I only meant to use the term for situations where I almost died because I don't know what else to call them. It's scary everytime is happens. I think the closest I ever came to dying was one time when I was kayaking in the Appalachians and my kayak got pinned by a fallen tree upside down in only a few feet of water (with me inside of course). There wasn't enough room for me to struggle free. So yeah, I almost drowned. You can feel your heart rate racing, your blood pressure increasing, I'll never forget the fear. You can feel your body pumping loads of powerful chemicals into your system. You know you probably won't make it anyways but you can't help but act like a frantic animal. I tried to calm myself down knowing that I would run out of oxygen soon but I just couldn't do it. Time feels slower. Anyways long story short I freed myself with one final push but passed out immediately afterwards. Somebody passing by pulled me out and revived me (there was a shore nearby).

WOAH....yeah that had to be scary man. Glad you made it, the forums wouldn't have been the same without you NV.
As for when I got hit by the car there were some crucial factors that didn't turned me into a paralyzed handicapped for life individual or dead. The car had the speed of 40mph and I was wearing a helmet. Everything was happening really fast, I went flying over his windshield right into the ditch and as a kid I didn't knew what to expect. I ended up with a broken leg with severe chock traumatized.
I wholeheartedly agree with everything NaturalViolence said, I would love to give you my own views on the matter, but where I live it is now 4 AM and I'm thinking about whether I should go to bed, or stay up and drink a couple of Red Bulls before going to University, so my brain isn't running at full capacity.
b2t: When talking about the fear of death I always like to quote from Robbie Williams' song "Come Undone": "I'm not scared of dying, I just don't want to." (I usually also add the next sentence "If I'd stop lying, I'd just disappoint you")^^ So, that's all I'm capable of thinking up right now. I think I'll go with Red Bull, since I won't wake up if I went to sleep now. 03-20-2013, 12:24 PM
I find after-life so confusing. And what about life on other planets? If you are reborn, is Earth just a 1 of 1 million chance of being your planet? Can you be born into the past? Before you are born is there nothing? Is there no beggining or end to nothing? So it never ends and never starts? How did I just magically start thinking? My head hurts...

Oh god not this topic again.
IlovetheGamecube Wrote:How did I just magically start thinking? Your parents had sex. This produced a fertilized egg cell. The fertilized egg then underwent embryonic development which produced neurons. The neurons began passing chemicals back and forth (neurotransmitters) that act as messengers. Through development (mitosis regulated by your genes) at some point the number of neurons in your brain reached a level high enough to form a neural network (biological circuits) complex enough to produce patterns of information flow that we abstractly refer to as "thoughts". Combined with enough time to properly optimize those circuits through a self-modifying feedback loop (learning) you reached self-awareness (you became aware of your existence and your thoughts). This is effectively thoughts within thoughts, like a virtual machine. At some point in your life cycle your brain formed the conclusion that you should connect to the internet, go on the dolphin-emu forums, and resurrect a dead thread with pseudo-philosophical questions. And that is how you reached this moment. I'm not going to bother answering the rest of your questions because they are either unanswerable or retarded.
