Is wiimote pointer lag typical (compared to real Wii)?

I started using bluetooth passthrough recently and have become very interested in getting my wiimotes to work on dolphin as faithful to the original hardware as possible.  I have been playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 and been very happy with the performance of bluetooth passthrough (when my adapter is not acting up) compared to the regular wiimote support.

However, SMG2 doesn't have much in the way of IR pointing aside from collecting start bits, etc. so I was not bothered much by the pointer movement lag, although I did find it a bit off.  Just for kicks, I played a bit of the balloon shooting game in Wii Play and that's when I noticed that the lag is significant.  I immediately turned on my real Wii and played there and could see that the IR movement was more crisp and faithful.

Both the Wii and the PC running dolphin are connected to the same TV, so even if the TV is adding some picture processing lag, it would be doing it on both.  In fact, the video output of the Wii is passing through an external analog to digital converter that allows for an HDMI connection to the TV, which could be adding lag to the video from the Wii itself and yet gameplay is less laggy.  I tried using USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.  I always play in exclusive fullscreen mode and tried playing with and without vsync.  None of this seemed to make a difference.

I would say the lag is not game breaking but does affect performance so I'm curious if this is to be expected or if perhaps it varies with BT adapters (mine is Kinivo BTD-400).

I have a Wii BT replacement module on order to wire it to USB and will be able to compare soon but if anybody has experience in dealing with wiimote lag, I would appreciate some feedback.

PS: Whoops, I meant to post in the controller sub-forum.

I'm even wondering if the lag has something to do with running the games at 3xIR, which the Wii was never intended to do. I'll verify that when I get back home by running at native resolution, just for testing purposes.

... and I couldn't be happier for you, my friend, but are you going to give me any tips or just brag? If you give me any information conducive to helping me achieve lower lag, I'll open a beer in your name right now.

At least tell me, do you use passthrough, exclusive fullscreen, vsync, an authentic Wii BT module or retail dongle and what video back-end?

I just did some testing with an old BT adapter I have lying around and, although it has a host of other problems for using in passthrough mode, it does seem to feel a bit less laggy than the one I'm currently using. This leads me to think that the problem is hardware limitations of the adapter itself, at least partially.

I'll just hang tight for the Wii BT module I ordered and check again when I put it together.

Just a quick follow-up to tell you that I tested the same game on my PC monitor and it feels super lag-free.  In fact, it feels less laggy than the Wii does on the TV, as you said.  The video path from the PC to the TV must be more laggy than from the Wii to the same TV, which could be a function of many things.

It's not unbearably laggy as it is but I'll try to play around with the TV settings to at least improve that.

many TVs have post processing systems that they pump the output image to before it hits the display. Check if your TV has some sort of "game mode"

Yeah, the difference seems very small on my TV but I'm using it in game mode, just in case.
