If your motherboard's a Z68 (I'm assuming Z86 is a typo?), you can cheaply get an i5-2500K or 2550K and a decent cooler (e.g. the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO) to overclock it heavily with. Going from 3.1 GHz to 4.2-5 GHz will make quite a few more things run at full speed.
