I want to listen to music while playing dolphin (Mario Kart Wii), but I want to turn off the background music while still keeping the sound effects, so I can still know what's going on in the race. Is this even possible?

Is there a way to turn off the BGM in games?

This would require either game-specific hacks/AR cheats or really awful DSP emulation. We used to have the latter, and even then it didn't break *every* game's music.

For MKWii, you can replace the BRSTMs and then patch the BRSAR. (Hack the rom to blank out the audio files)

Technically, the Zelda ucode differentiates between music and sound effects, so it would be possible to hack Dolphin's HLE implementation to produce silence for the relevant samples. A potentially buggier method would be to set the status of a sound as "Off" whenever the ucode indicates the sound being processed is music. There aren't a lot of Zelda ucode games, in comparison to AX ucode games though.
