Is it my processor or video card that is too slow

I recently downloaded the latest stable version of the Dolphin.  

Although most gamecube games run slow and laggy in some levels. Especially when there is alot of detail.  

I'm trying to figure out what is affecting the speed.   So i plan to get a new video card or processor.


Here are my current specs for my computer:


Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 2.34GHz
8.00 GB Ram
Window 7 64bit
Nvidia Geforce GT 640 2GB
Dolphin: 4.0-9023

I'm thinking it's my processor that can't handle the emulator? Since it's only 2.33GHz 

Or is my video card also too old?

Can someone give me some advice?


I am planning on getting this processor in several months:


Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W


It's a 3.3GHz compared to the 2.3GHz that i have now, would 3.3GHz be enough?


I really want a 6 core because i do a lot of multi-tasking, If 3.3 is not enough, this is my second option,

Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0 GHz


Although that one only has 4 cores, but it's got 4.0GHz, i know the emulator only uses 2 cores, but i want 6 cores for my personal work.




I really want to continue playing on my computer, it's very convenient.

Get a newer CPU. Yours is 8 years old. Your profile says you're using a dev release. Your post says you're using the two year old stable release. Which is it? Use the dev release.

If you go with i7 4790k , you can pair it with H97 mobo which is much cheaper than the mobo for i7 5820k (X99 chipset)
All i5 , i7 have turbo boost function that allow CPU achieve higher speed automatically . i7 4790k can go up to 4.4GHz and i7 5820k can go up to 3.6GHz which is good enough for most games

Your CPU is too old . Any Haswell CPU @ 2.3GHz can be twice as fast as your old quad core @ 2.3GHz in Dolphin Benchmark . A Haswell @ 3.6GHz is more likely 300->350% faster than what you're having right now

i bought a new video card because when playing wind waker my cpu is only at about about 40%, so it wasn't the cpu

i bought a new video card and it runs fine, so it was the video card that was giving me problems, the gt 640 2gb is not powerful enough

i am using a gtx 970 4gb and wind waker runs fine, theres no lag

using 40% CPU sounds about right. You have 4 threads and dolphin loads up 2 heavy working threads.

You will likely find a handful of games still don't quite run at full speed.

i have an i7-5820K 3.3ghz with overclock of 3.9 on my main desktop, but it runs linux, i had some much problems with the linux version 5.0 emulator,

so i took out my 2 year old computer and put in the gtx 970 from my main desktop and its runs pretty good on this old computer

looks like i'll be using 2 computers from now on because of linux, this will be my gaming computer, and my other computer where i do my work,
too bad linux doesnt do well for gaming, so im stuck using 2 desktops, luckily i dont game often

windows is king for gaming, but i love linux so i wont use windows on my main desktop

so a 2.2ghz is enough for wind waker?
i use it on 1080p

but when i put it on 5k, it lags, but then my processor is still at 40%, so it cant be my processor?
so i need a more powerful video card? gtx 1080ti?

when you up the resolution, that taxes your GPU, not your CPU.
