For example, I was able to run Mario Kart: Double Dash at a fairly decent pace (only the audio was a little messed up) until I upgraded my Macbook Pro to OSX Mavericks. Now, the game CRAWLS through the menu screen - it's completely unplayable. I had the same results with The Simpsons: Hit & Run and will try out other games when I have the chance. I was wondering if Mavericks is what's causing this problem...

pfft, you don't seem to have a really strong pc but the menus should be nice.

Have you changed/upgraded Dolphin versions since upgrading? This shouldn't be happening and it's most likely related to Mavericks.
Anyways, sadly we lack OSX devs so I don't think this will be fixed sometime soon.

yeah, I have the latest version of Dolphin. My macbook can turboboost up to 3.1ghz if that makes a difference. Shame there aren't more devs since MacBooks are so popular.

OSX only uses OpenGL. You may want to use BootCamp to use Windows to get D3D (which is currently a bit faster than OpenGL on Windows, and a bit more faster than OpenGL on OSX due to Windows optimizations and being able to use Throttle Stop)

Performance on OS X has always been pretty weird. In your case, it might be that it's dropping down to Apple's software renderer instead of actually using your GPU since Dolphin may, for example, be using some GL function that was recently broken in your GPU's drivers. Open up Activity Monitor or another app that monitors CPU usage – if you see a process named "cvmcompiler" taking up a ton of CPU, that's Apple's software renderer.

Short story: I was using beta builds of OS X 10.8.3/4 while testing GLSL-master on OS X with my shitty Intel HD 3000, and at first it would use broken hardware rendering in the betas, then later it started dropping down to software rendering. Eventually it started working decently with hardware rendering, but it still had major issues (e.g. hardlocking the OS) that made Dolphin unusable until someone finally figured out that the NV_primitive_restart GL extension was causing my HD 3000-specific issues.
