These chips will not run on older Haswell boards such as H81 , B85 without bios update . H97 and Z97 are the only two types these chips will run on
h97 and Z97 are more expensive than H81 , B85
About your question : which one is better ?
I say the Xeon is always better . Why ? the Xeon has Hyperthreading , it will blow away any i5 in multithreaded app . 100MHz difference in speed doesn't matter at all
Xeon E3 1230 + H81 or B85 should be cheaper than E3-1231 + H97
Q : Will it run 60FPS in most games?
A : Yes
Q : Also 4 Gamers Super Smash Bro´s in 60 FPS?
A : If it's you versus 3 PCs then it won't be the problem . If other players are controlled by human (you're playing with 3 friends or your family) then idk
He said he's getting a Z97 in the original post, so haswell is no issue. Xeon should blow away the i5 in emulation workloads (as it caters to the processing style of Xeon's more), but Xeon is more specialized in the types of workloads it is optimized for. General use i would say i5 is better, and some native games will also see better performance on the i5. Raw speed isn't the only comparison, as the two processors have architecture differences, and are intended for different workloads. Both are probably enough to smash normal emulation, but OP needs to decide what he would use his computer for mostly.
