SteamOS is debian based AFAIK.

Sounds like you're missing some repositories, try to uncomment some lines in /etc/apt/sources.list, afterwards run "apt-get update" and start from scratch.

Most of this is going way above my head Sad . Would it be simpler to just install windows on the device?

It's not very complicated; you just have to remove the "#" from some lines, then run apt-get update. And yes, Windows would probably be simpler for you if you found this a bit complicated. But since you went through the hassle of installing it, you may as well fix it Wink
