indeterminate TAS input recording

Hello,
I am new here, so I apologize if there is already a thread for this. If there is, please direct me to it, I have tried searching to no avail.

I am interested in TASing and maybe eventually TAS speedrunning a full game. I am running into a strange result where the same input recording causes different results when played over again. For example, on one playthrough, my recording will shoot an enemy, and on another, my recording will miss. I have been trying to be very careful to make sure that I have no overlapping savestates, and I have kept read-only mode unchecked when adding more onto a recording.

I am confused as to how the same recording could produce different results when replayed. It seems like if I have made a recording mistake, I should at least have consistency, even if it doesn't do exactly what I want.

What am I doing wrong? Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

For reference, I have had this same problem on three games:
Starfox Assault
Super Smash Brothers Melee
The Incredibles

There should be no need to disable idle skipping.

I disabled both dual core and idle skipping and I still have the same problem.

There's no need to do that, fake-completion works fine. What you probably need to do is make a backup of your memcards before you start recording, record whatever it is you want to, and replace the newly created memcard with the copy you made before--then you should be able to replay them.

Thanks!

Disconnecting all memory cards works for any new recordings I make. I will go back to some old recordings later to try to recover my old recordings by making multiple copies of memory cards and finding one that works.
