The current filesize limit is 500 KB (for PNG) and has forced me to upload screenshots to ad-supported image hosts. Also Imgur will eventually delete all uploaded images or disable hotlinking — the forum should encourage users to use the built-in attachment system.

I've never seen imgur do that, source?

I mean that it will happen, not that Imgur currently deletes any images (excluding those which are against the rules).

Photobucket disabled hotlinking in 2017 (the embedded images were replaced with a promotional photo) and demanded an extremely high yearly fee without any former notice: https://www.pcmag.com/news/354711/photobucket-breaks-image-links-across-the-internet

I don't know to what extent this is really the case, but it's definitely feeling to me like imgur's becoming more and more self-important lately. For example, it used to be the case that when you used the button to get a link or auto-create a Reddit post, it would link directly to the image but now it links to the page the image is on.

I'm pretty sure Imgur won't do that because it's still an unofficial image host for Reddit, and many people rely on that.

I think somebody talked about this a long time ago on the forums here, but increasing the upload limit for pictures on Dolphin's forums means more people would use the forum to host images, meaning the forum would need more space on the servers to host the website, costing more money.

The stated reason for Reddit creating their own image hosting system was that they didn't want to be beholden to the whims of external image hosts. If they were certain imgur was going to be friendly forever there'd have been no need.

That's kind of by design, for images at least. Our bandwidth/server space isn't unlimited, so attachments ought to be small and limited whenever possible. Big pictures should be uploaded to a 3rd party image hosting site.
